Mumbai is in the grip of its first post-monsoon heatwave, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for October 9 after the city recorded a temperature of 37.6°C on October 8, according to reports.

The mercury reading of 37.6°C, logged on Wednesday, underlined the intensity of the hot spell settling over the city in the post-monsoon period. With conditions expected to remain hot and humid, the weather office’s yellow alert signals that residents should be aware and take precautions, particularly during the afternoon hours when temperatures peak.

According to reports, residents have been advised to take precautions against the hot and humid conditions. Standard guidance during such spells includes staying hydrated, limiting exposure to direct sun during the hottest part of the day, and looking out for symptoms of heat-related illness, especially among children, the elderly and those working outdoors. For a dense metropolis where large numbers commute daily, sustained heat of this kind quickly becomes a public-health consideration.

The heat has reportedly also affected local train services, the lifeline of Mumbai’s commuter network. Even minor heat-related disruption on the suburban rail system can ripple across the city, given the millions who depend on it every day, and any slowing of services during peak hours adds to the discomfort of travelling in high temperatures.

Post-monsoon heat is a familiar feature of Mumbai’s climate calendar, as the retreat of the rains gives way to a warm, humid spell before winter. This episode, however, has been sharp enough for the IMD to categorise it as the season’s first post-monsoon heatwave for the city and to accompany it with a formal yellow alert for October 9, according to reports.

Residents will be watching for relief in the coming days as forecasters track whether the temperatures ease or the spell extends. Until then, the advice remains straightforward: take the heat seriously, plan travel and outdoor work around the worst of the afternoon sun, and heed further updates from the weather department as the city’s first post-monsoon heatwave runs its course.
