The Cleveland Guardians kept their season alive on the latest day of the Major League Baseball playoffs, beating the Chicago White Sox 9-5 in their American League Division Series, according to reports, on the strength of a six-run sixth inning.

Cleveland entered the game with its back against the wall: the White Sox led the series 2-1, meaning one more Chicago win would have ended the Guardians’ postseason. Instead, the Guardians’ offence erupted in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to seize control of the game and turn a must-win fixture into a 9-5 victory. The result levels the momentum of the series and forces the contest to continue, with Chicago’s 2-1 lead now under direct threat.

A six-run inning is the kind of outburst that can reshape a short playoff series. According to reports, the Guardians built their win around that single decisive frame, having needed a breakthrough against a White Sox side that arrived one win from the American League Championship Series. Cleveland’s batters delivered it in the middle innings, and the pitching staff protected the lead the rest of the way to close out the 9-5 result.

The defeat leaves the White Sox still ahead in the series but now facing a Cleveland team with renewed belief. In a best-of-five Division Series, a 2-1 leader that fails to close out the fourth game must win a deciding fifth game or see its season end, and the pressure in the match-up has shifted accordingly after the Guardians’ comeback win.

In the other American League series, according to reports, the Tampa Bay Rays reached the ALCS after sweeping the New York Yankees. Tampa Bay’s clean sweep removes one of the league’s biggest names from the bracket and sends the Rays into the championship round with their pitching and lineup having handled New York across the series.

The American League picture is therefore half settled: the Rays await the winner of the Guardians-White Sox series in the ALCS. Cleveland’s survival win guarantees at least one more game in that contest, and with elimination still looming for the Guardians and a place in the championship series on the line for Chicago, the next meeting between the two clubs will decide who joins Tampa Bay in the final four of the MLB playoffs.
