The United States on October 9 imposed sanctions on two Mumbai-based companies and five Indian nationals, according to reports, as part of a broader enforcement action targeting networks accused of trading in Iranian petroleum products.

The companies designated in the action are SSPL Solutions Private Limited and Samudra Marine Services Private Limited, both based in Mumbai. Five Indian nationals were also named alongside the two firms. According to reports, the measures were announced under a US effort known as “Operation Economic Outcast,” which focuses on Iran-linked petroleum trade.

Washington alleges that the firms and individuals were involved in trading Iranian petroleum products. Sanctions designations of this kind typically freeze any assets the listed parties hold within US jurisdiction and prohibit American individuals and companies from conducting transactions with them. In practice, they can also make it harder for designated parties to access international banking, insurance and shipping services, because many global institutions avoid sanctioned counterparties altogether.

The listings extend a long-running US campaign to restrict Iran’s oil revenues by applying pressure not only on Iranian sellers but also on foreign intermediaries accused of helping move Iranian cargoes. Third-country trading and services companies in Asia have repeatedly featured in such actions, and compliance teams across the energy and maritime sectors tend to treat new designations as an immediate screening priority.

According to the reports, the announcement formed part of the wider “Operation Economic Outcast” initiative directed at Iran. No further operational detail about the alleged transactions was included in the initial reporting, and there was no immediate indication of a response from the two Mumbai companies or from the five individuals named.

Parties placed on US sanctions lists can petition the Treasury Department for removal, although that process is often lengthy and requires demonstrating that the grounds for designation no longer apply. For now, the designations take effect immediately, and companies with any exposure to the named firms are likely to review their dealings while the situation develops. Further official detail may emerge as the full designation notices are published and analysed by compliance specialists in the region and beyond.
