Donald Trump has said the United States will not resume military strikes on Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, pointing to what he described as productive discussions.

The comments suggest Washington is choosing talks over a new round of force, at least for now. They come after an interim deal reached in June collapsed, leaving both sides without a working agreement and the region on edge.

According to reports, Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, is expected to deliver a formal reply within days. That response will be watched closely for signs of whether the diplomatic path has real room to move.

Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz remain a major concern in the background. The narrow waterway carries a large share of the world’s energy trade, so any threat to shipping there quickly raises fears about oil supplies and prices.

For the White House, the timing is significant. A fresh military campaign weeks before midterm elections would carry heavy political risk at home, as well as uncertain results abroad.

Analysts note that pausing strikes does not end the wider dispute. Questions over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional alliances and sanctions remain unresolved, and each side accuses the other of bad faith.

Still, the statement lowers the immediate temperature. Markets and regional governments tend to read such remarks as a sign that Washington wants to avoid a wider conflict while talks continue.

Much now depends on the formal reply from Tehran. If it opens the door to further meetings, the pause could stretch beyond the elections. If it is rejected in Washington, the pressure for tougher action is likely to return quickly.
