Who needs limos? Saugus prom-goers will travel by school bus

Saugus Public Schools appears to have found a solution to its prom-bus dilemma.

Rather than using coach buses as originally planned, School Committee Chair Vincent Serino said Tuesday that the senior class will take yellow school buses to its prom at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown, making the tickets free in the process.

“The students worked on this and they’re good with it,” Serino said.

At a meeting of the committee in March, Class President Jessica Bremberg and Vice President Madilyn Femino reported that the class’ budgeting for the past year for coach buses to take the class to its prom on May 30 had encountered a major hurdle.

While the class had been estimating a cost of around $4,000 for the buses, which the Class of 2023 had paid, it learned at the last minute that that company did not offer sexual assault and molestation insurance, which the town’s insurance company was now requiring.

Bus companies offering the insurance are much harder to find, Bremberg said, and the company they found that did offer it was twice as expensive as the one they originally planned to take.

At a meeting of the committee last Thursday, resident Kerry Hogan asked if the district’s regular school buses have the necessary insurance, and School Committee member Stephanie Mastrocola replied that they do.

Serino said Tuesday that he is not certain whether the buses that will bring students to prom are the same that the district regularly uses.

“I think there’ll be more to come at the next (School Committee) meeting,” he said.

He added that Bremberg and Femino will also speak at the committee’s next meeting on April 11.
