US Flag Etiquette: Essential Rules You Should Never Violate
Share This

The flag of the United States is a powerful symbol that represents the values, history, and identity of our nation. It is more than just a decorative element; it is an emblem of freedom and democracy that deserves respect and proper handling. Learn all about the official US flag rules to ensure you treat it with the honor it deserves.

1. Following the Position of Honor

When the US flag is flown amongst other flags, it should always be in the position of honor. This means it should be at the highest point or at the center and slightly higher than the other flags. If the flags are on separate poles, raise the US flag first and lower it last.

2. Flying the Flag the Right Way

The US flag should be flown with the 50 stars (otherwise known as the union) at the top and to the flag’s right, which is the observer’s left. When the flag is vertical or horizontal against a wall, the union should be at the top and to the flag’s own right.

3. Respecting the Flag at All Times

The US flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, water, or merchandise. When not in use, it should be respectfully folded into a triangle.

4. Properly Disposing the Flag

When a flag becomes tattered or faded and is no longer fit for display, it should be destroyed in a dignifying manner, preferably by burning. Many American Legion posts and Boy Scout troops conduct flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day, June 14th, providing a respectful way to dispose of old flags.

5. Displaying the Flag After Sundown

It is customary to display the US flag from sunrise to sunset. However, you can display the flag all day if you illuminate it at night.

6. Flying the Flag in Inclement Weather

Another US flag rule to follow is to not display it on days when the weather is inclement. However, there are ways to protect flags during the winter and prevent damage.

7. Displaying the Flag at Half-Staff

On certain days and periods, such as Memorial Day or upon the order of the president, one should display the flag at half-staff to signify a mourning period. When the flag flies at half-staff, one should initially hoist the flag to the peak momentarily, then lower it to the half-staff position.
